WHY DOES HIMACHAL PRADESH NEED CLEAN TRANSPORTATION NOW MORE THAN EVER?
The shift to clean transportation in Himachal Pradesh is both an environmental and developmental imperative. The state’s fragile Himalayan ecosystems are experiencing rapid climate shifts, with snow cover declining by 18.5% in just one year (2019 to 2020). Glacial retreat in the Lahaul valley is occurring at a rate of 0.3 to 1 meter per year, and the region has already seen a 13% loss in glacier area between 1999 and 2011. These changes are closely linked to rising temperatures, which have increased by 1.3°C over the last three decades, and to local emissions, particularly from transport. In tourist corridors such as the Manali to Keylong to Kaza route, over 70% of incoming vehicles run on diesel, contributing to 35 to 40% of local air pollution during peak tourist seasons. Particulate Matter (PM10) levels in the region have been observed to spike above 80 to 100 µg/m³, well beyond the safe limit of 60 µg/m³. With tourism surging, and over 10.5 lakh domestic tourists visiting Lahaul-Spiti in 2024 (a 13.24% increase), emissions, congestion, and ecological pressure are mounting. Electric mobility offers a strategic solution. It can significantly reduce air pollution, protect water sources fed by melting glaciers, and support sustainable tourism. Himachal Pradesh has already committed to this vision, aiming to become a ‘Model State for Electric Vehicles’ by converting 3,000 fuel-based taxis to electric and developing six green corridors with charging infrastructure. Backed by strong policy and governance, EV adoption can help secure the region’s ecological future while promoting resilient and inclusive growth.
